CNN Ratings Plunge To Near-Record Lows

$

January 2014 was not a month to remember for CNN.

The network is in rebuilding mode, trying to push away from its traditional reliance on breaking news. So it's perhaps not surprising that its ratings are not at their most robust. Even so, the numbers are stinging: as the Hollywood Reporter and TVNewser noted, it was CNN's third-worst ratings month in its history. CNN lost 39% of its total primetime audience from the same month in 2013, and 35% of its primetime audience in the coveted A25-54 demo.

Arch-rival MSNBC also saw its ratings fall from 2013, but not nearly as much as CNN did. (It dropped just 2% in the primetime demo, for instance.) It landed in second place in all categories in both total day and primetime. Fox News, meanwhile, saw its ratings grow from January 2013, though they fell by 1% in the primetime demo category. As ever, it retained its comfortable first place lead.

One big winner for the month: Chris Matthews, whose move to 7 PM netted him his best-ever ratings in the demo.

Jimmy Fallon Interviews Himself For Men's Health

Just when you thought Jimmy Fallon couldn't get any funnier, he agreed to interview himself for the March issue of Men's Health. Yup, you read that right -- Jimmy Fallon interviewed Jimmy Fallon and it was pretty epic.

Here are some highlights:

This is Men’s Health, so we should probably talk about how I’m keeping in such amazing shape.
Oh, Jimmy, you really are. And you’re doing it in spite of the beer and pizza and the chicken wings you found at this awesome Korean place that you go to at least once a week. But go ahead, Jimmy, lie to yourself. Tell yourself you’re in great shape.

You’ve had your share of workouts on "Late Night." There’s the “History of Rap” bit we do with Justin Timberlake. We have to be at least in semigood shape to pull off all that dancing.
Well, it didn’t come naturally. I remember watching Soulja Boy on YouTube over and over again to prepare for it. For the first one, I was up all night in my kitchen practicing the dance because I knew I had to dance with Timberlake, and that guy can dance. And you, Jimmy Fallon, cannot dance. But that’s just because you over-rehearsed it. You didn’t stop until finally your wife came into the kitchen and said, “Honey, it’s 1:30 in the morning. You have to stop this. Just go to sleep.”

What have we learned about women over the years? What’s the Jimmy Fallon secret to ending up with a fantastic woman?
The truest thing I can say is ... sometimes you just know. But that’s terrible advice. The only people who say that are the people who just knew. How do you know unless you found that person?

What’s your happiness secret?
[Long pause.] Wow. Now we’re spelunking into a cave of thought. Hmm ... It’s just a way of being. Every little thing in moderation: stress, anger, joy, depression.

But what was a high point for you? When are you, we, Jimmy Fallon our very happiest?
You’ve had a lot of those high points. You have a baby, which you’ve been wanting for a long time. You felt very lucky that it happened at all.

We had a long struggle with that.
We did. I think that makes you slow down sometimes and appreciate the little things. There’ll be nights when you’re sitting on your couch, and you’re with your beautiful wife, who you can’t believe married you, and your beautiful baby, who you feel endlessly grateful you were able to have. And your dog ...

Our dog is amazing too?
Oh my gosh, we have a really, really great dog. It doesn’t bark. My dog almost smiles, which is weird. So you’re sitting there, with your wife and your baby and your smiling dog, and you’re watching "Real Housewives" getting into fistfights on TV. And you go, “How great is my life? I’m so happy right now.”

That trumps your "Tonight" gig?
It really does. That’s what true happiness is right there.

'Fleming' Review: A Look At The Spy Who Created Bond, James Bond

$

fleming

Would it surprise you to learn that the man who created Bond -- James Bond -- liked fast cars, fine living, custom-made cigarettes and cocktails made in a very particular way?

Probably not, but unless you've read a biography of Bond's creator, portions of the well-acted four-part miniseries "Fleming" (10 p.m. ET Wednesday, BBC America) may come as a surprise.

Dominic Cooper infuses the role of Ian Fleming with the right mixture of insouciance and world-weariness, and half the fun of "Fleming" is seeing what a failure the author was before he turned to spycraft and writing, two careers that turned out to be perfect for his strange emotional makeup and his odd mixture of talents.

When we first meet Fleming, he's in debt, flailing professionally as "London's worst stockbroker" and regularly infuriating his disapproving mother, who comes off throughout as a character straight out of a P.G. Woodhouse novel. Fleming has luck with ladies, but in all other respects, he's outshone by his far more respectable brother, who is regarded as the family's only promising prospect.

With his mother's help, Fleming stumbles into a job in the Navel Intelligence Division just as World War II begins, and that's when the story really gets going. Samuel West plays Fleming's boss with winning drollness, which helps to distract the viewer from some underwritten supporting roles, including a Fleming flame who's supposedly a prototype for a Bond Girl but is mostly forgettable here. Anna Chancellor ("The Hour"), who has been absolutely terrific in everything I've seen her in, plays a warm, witty Intelligence aide, and she adds a lot of spark to the scenes of Fleming at work.

It's a good thing that the actors know how to deliver this sometimes-clunky material, because dialogue is often all they have to work with. It's true that Fleming wasn't engaged in field work for most of the war, so scenes set in offices and luxury hotels make sense, but "Fleming" feels curiously constricted for a story about a well-traveled writer who created an archetypal "man of the world." There are some lovely sets and decent action scenes here and there, but the limitations of "Fleming's" paltry budget become obvious as it trundles through the author's pre-literary life. Don't come to this expecting the flash and big-budget thrills of a Bond film; like its overextended lead character, "Fleming" simply doesn't have the cash for it.

The drama is also almost hilariously unsubtle at times, as if it doesn't trust the viewer to have a working knowledge of the most basic Bond lore. Characters pointedly discuss Bond tropes like the "license to kill" and have to deliver lines that are painfully obvious or on the nose ("What made you like this?" "Ian's a puzzle!").

That said, Cooper does a solid job with the title role, and the early installments have an engaging briskness. Fleming is repeatedly told that war isn't a game, but the weapons and tactics of espionage suit his irreverent intelligence and lively imagination very well indeed. However, "Fleming" drags a bit in its second half; given its slender budget, it might have worked better as a three-episode miniseries.

Even if you're not particularly into Bond-ian history, a reason to give "Fleming" a try comes in the form of Lara Pulver, who manages to steal the show from its ostensible lead.

Pulver, who gave such memorable liveliness to Irene Adler on "Sherlock," plays Ann O'Neill, a society beauty with whom Fleming has a tortured love affair, and the actress gives texture, depth and pathos to O'Neill's emotional states. The Fleming-O'Neill affair goes around in circles a few too many times, but the fact that Cooper and Pulver are able to access the characters' brutality, affection and carnality so readily makes the storyline more watchable than it almost has a right to be.

Cooper's been burbling around the edges of film stardom for a while, but I wonder if the movies or the TV industry will figure out what to do with Pulver, who has a retro look but exudes a very modern confidence and intelligence. The fact that Pulver is stuck on "DaVinci's Demons" making do with material that is far beneath her talents is a migraine-inducing crime. But I have faith that, as was the case with Fleming, the talented Pulver will rise above the occasional indignities of her early career.

Jian Ghomeshi: Olympic Boycott Is A Bad Idea (VIDEO)

Radio personality Jian Ghomeshi is taking his popular radio show Q on the road to Sochi as key plank in CBC's Winter Olympic broadcast schedule.

Ghomeshi says he is eager for the challenge. The Sochi Games have become one of the most scrutinized Olympics in recent history. Security concerns among athletes and visitors even exceed the terror fears in the post-9/11 run up to the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. The huge bill for the Games, believed to be in excess of $50-billion USD, restrictions placed on the media and even the balmy weather conditions are raising questions about whether the Games will succeed.

However, no issue has been more divisive or more discussed than Russia's draconian anti-LGBT legislation. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been trying to downplay criticism about the laws, assuring that visitors will not face persecution while in the country. Some have called for a boycott, while others hope athletes will make statements during the Games.

Ghomeshi sees this as a defining issue of the Games, and one that he will not avoid.

"This repressive law, which is counter to our laws in Canada, particularly around LGBT issues in Russia is getting way more attention because the Olympic Games are happening there than it ever would if the Olympic Games were somewhere else," said Ghomeshi. "Q doesn't necessarily have any kind of political mandate, but we do consider it a progressive show that addresses issues head on, and we are not going to shy away from that."

Ghomeshi added that CBC officials have "read him the riot act" about how his social media use will be scrutinized by security officials.

"So I am ready for that, but there's no backing off."

Andy Samberg: I Didn't Deserve To Win A Golden Globe

Andy Samberg was perhaps more shocked than anyone when he won a Golden Globe for his work on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." He dropped by "Chelsea Lately" where he said quite plainly, "I was genuinely surprised, because I didn’t deserve it." While Samberg believes the show itself is worthy of recognition -- and it did win for Outstanding Comedy -- he thought he was outclassed in his category.

"It was like, Michael J. Fox, and Jim Parsons, and Jason Bateman," Samberg said. "Don Cheadle, who was in 'Hotel Rwanda.' Yeah, I get the acting trophy over 'Hotel Rwanda' guy."

Handler agreed with Samberg that he wasn't the best actor in the group, but she also agreed that the show deserved its big win. Fox is hoping to get more people watching its Golden Globe-winning series by slotting a special episode after this weekend's Super Bowl coverage. It's being paired with an episode of "New Girl" guest-starring Prince.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" airs after "New Girl" when both comedies broadcast special episodes after Fox's coverage of the Super Bowl this Sunday. Otherwise, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" airs Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. EST on Fox. "Chelsea Lately" airs weeknights at 11 p.m. EST on E!

'The Bachelor': Uh Oh, Sharleen Not Ready For Kids

Opera singer Sharleen continues to draw the eye of Juan Pablo on "The Bachelor." During a group trip to South Korea, he asked her how many kids she wanted. Juan Pablo has a young daughter already, which is why it was a bit of a surprise when Sharleen said that she'd never really thought about kids.

She went on to say that she dated someone who had a daughter before. "I was not ready for that," she said, and yet Juan Pablo's daughter is about the same age as the daughter she "was not ready for." Has Sharleen changed her mind about things since then, or could this be a deal-breaker -- if so, then why is she on this show?

Despite their conversation, Juan Pablo still gave her a rose, and she accepted. But while Hollywood Life's Emily Longeretta thought her admission would have been a clear red flag to Juan Pablo, Zap2It's Andrea Reiher is still on Team Sharleen. "[She] is just very honest about how she's not in love with Juan Pablo yet and she has no idea if this is the man she's going to marry," she wrote. "Well, thank goodness. Because it's been literally ... a fortnight since you met him. More girls like Sharleen for this show!”

Juan Pablo's search for love continues on "The Bachelor," Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

'How I Met Your Mother' 200th Episode: We Finally Get The Mother's Story

For its 200th episode, "How I Met Your Mother" had a real treat for long-time fans. "How Your Mother Met Me" was all about The Mother. It even featured a new opening title sequence featuring her and her friends. It was further proof that Cristin Milioti was perfectly cast as Ted's future wife.

As we expected, her narrative weaved in and out of Ted's life, offering us her point of view for pivotal moments we knew, like the night Ted returned her umbrella, and missed connections we didn't know -- she was sitting in that classroom Ted mistakenly started lecturing in on his first day as a teacher. We also learned that she'd been in love at a young age, and he passed away. While Ted has been looking for love, The Mother has been grieving and healing her broken heart.

Entertainment Weekly's Sandra Gonzalez loved that The Mother now feels like a real character. "A woman who’s survived real heartbreak, gone through real challenges and has real goals in life," she wrote. "I’ve been waiting nine years to see her like that — and I gotta say, it feels wonderful."

"How I Met Your Mother" is closing in on its big finale, Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

Kimmel Reveals 'Bachelor' Lie Detector Results: Did Sean And Catherine Really Abstain From Sex?

"Bachelor" stars Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici got married in a live, televised ceremony over the weekend, but it was their claim that they'd abstained from sex throughout their entire engagement that may have gotten even more attention. It certainly got the attention of Jimmy Kimmel.

The late-night host wasn't satisfied to take the couple at their word, and so he strapped them into a lie detector machine to find the real truth. Each of them was strapped in separately, and they stood by their claims that they had never had sex with one another. He promised to reveal the results on Monday night's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," one night after their wedding.

Viewers got to see both of them strapped into the machine and questioned, where they stood their ground. When it was over, Kimmel asked, "Did they abstain from sex before marriage for a period of 16 months?” He was a little disappointed to find out that they'd been truthful. He also felt strangely proud of them.

The new "Bachelor" searches for love every Monday at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. "Jimmy Kimmel Live" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on ABC.

President Barack Obama delivers his fifth State of the Union address on Tuesday night (Jan 28). And though the White House is taking a cue from "The West Wing" by throwing a "Big Block of Cheese Day," how does the fictional world of "The West Wing" differ from reality when it comes to the important speech before the nation?

Here is a picture The White House tweeted today of Obama preparing by for tonight by reading through a final draft of the speech:

Which looks different than when President Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, practiced his speech:

Other "West Wing" stars are also celebrating the State of the Union address. Actor Rob Lowe, who portrayed Sam Seaborn on the series tweeted:

'MTV Unplugged' Performances Throughout The Years

The Miley Cyrus episode of "MTV Unplugged" airs on Wednesday, reigniting one of the network's most iconic shows, which was once at the epicenter of music culture.

Many of the '90s and early 2000s' most popular artists headlined "Unplugged," and in turn the series doubled as a ratings cash cow for the network while providing a bump on the Billboard charts for performers. Today, the show is regarded as more of an MTV relic: episodes still air sporadically (Florence + the Machine and Mumford & Sons are among the acts that headlined recently), but "Unplugged" hasn't been a staple on the airwaves in more than a decade.

Whether or not Cyrus' appearance will help to electrify "Unplugged" is yet to be seen (and, honestly, doubtful considering the current landscape at MTV). But with a guest appearance by Madonna, in which the two will perform a medley of "Don't Tell Me" and "We Can't Stop," all eyes should be on Cyrus as she brings her antics to the stripped-down "Unplugged" stage. Meanwhile, let's reminisce about past artists who've graced the show. Check out select clips below.

Sarah Paulson May Have Leaked The 'American Horror Story' Supreme Secret

We may have been dead right in our "American Horror Story: Coven" theory about the next Supreme.

With some digging, an easter egg was discovered in the "Coven" opening credits, revealing that Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) may succeed Fiona (Jessica Lange) as Supreme, the coven's most powerful witch. And Paulson may have just confirmed our theory.

Teasing about the final episode, which airs Wednesday (Jan. 29), Paulson told The Hollywood Reporter, "Cordelia maybe has a little bit more of her mother's ju-ju than I think you might have imagined." Perhaps we've totally been underestimating Cordelia's magic.

Still not convinced? Paulson also spilled that Cordelia is more involved in the finale than she has been in previous episodes this season, and likened the ending of "Coven" to the conclusion of "Asylum," She hinted, "There's a similarity in terms of coming full circle."

If you recall, (spoiler alert if you haven't finished "Asylum") Paulson's Lana was the only survivor at the end of the show's second season. When the witches attempt the Seven Wonders in the new episode of "Coven," only one witch, the rightful Supreme, will remain standing.

Paulson was the hero last season, so perhaps creator Ryan Murphy will let her steal the spotlight once again on "Coven."

The season finale of "American Horror Story: Coven" airs on FX on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 10:00 p.m. EST.

She may be worth billions of dollars, but that doesn't keep media mogul Oprah from being joyously laid-back and downright goofy on her Instagram account. Oprah Gail Winfrey, who celebrates her 60th birthday Wednesday (Jan. 29), only joined the photo-sharing social network in April 2012, but oh, what a fabulous journey it's been. Or, as Oprah might say, what a fabulous jouuuuur-neeyyyy!!

Below, some of Oprah's best Instagram moments.

Because even Oprah can't contain the fan girl inside her: "My first time meeting Mick Jagger! And yes he dances like MICK JAGGER!"

Not afraid to geek out with a dorky pose on vacation: "Safe landing . Gonna eat and run. #backtoUSyay!"

What's a "maguarita"? Either way, looks like Oprah had one too many: "At my desk still , chillin with a watermelon marguarita getting ready for #HavesandHaveNots . Tweet Party is ON."

Oprah loves harvesting: "Harvessssst Day again! zucchini and artichokes new addition to our crop. #veggiesoup"

Can we have just one bite? Pretty please? "Perfect color for French Toast made from Challah! #happysupersoulsunday"

Sing it, gurrrrl! "Carmelized onions so pretty they make me sing! Getting ready for Turkey day. Kitchen smells like HOME."

How many times have we had the same honkers on our foreheads: "Happiest moment: Dr.Christy Hurt comes to give me a shot for the big honking zits on my forehead. Honking zits not good for movie close ups."

But she did! "Happiest moment of the day: finishing the workout I didn't want to start."

Happy 60th birthday, Oprah. We hope you continue making us laugh and smile. "Fun day. Makeup artists doing a silicon cast for my face for new movie the BUTLER directed by Lee Daniels"

What To Watch On Super Bowl Sunday If You Hate Football

$

Ugh, football. One of America's favorite pastimes, filled with bulky men throwing themselves at one another, causing brain-damaging concussions. It's not for everyone.

If you're like one of the few million Americans who tune in to Animal Planet's annual Puppy Bowl, you know there are other things to watch on Super Bowl Sunday besides the actual Super Bowl. Here's what to watch if you hate football:

Zombie Bowl Marathon on AMC
"The Walking Dead" Season 4 returns to AMC on Sunday, Feb. 9, but the network will show a day-long marathon of the show starting at 10 a.m. EST on Feb. 2.

10th Annual Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet
Animal Planet's annual Super Bowl alternative is back! Watch adorable puppies play with each other on a miniature football field while kittens "perform" at the halftime show. But watch out for puppy, um, penalties, which are on full display. Puppy Bowl X starts at 3 p.m. EST and airs on loop all night.

Funny Movie Marathon on Comedy Central
Comedy Central will air back-to-back stoner comedies for the non-Super Bowl watchers who still want to salute Washington and Colorado's affinity for green. Tune in at 10:30 a.m. EST for "The Girl Next Door," "My Best Friend's Girl," "Austin Powers in Goldmembe" and "Dumb and Dumber."

All Day Rom-Com Heaven on FX
Let's assume that FX thinks women hate football and love romantic comedies. If they're correct, they're going to have a very one-sided demographic for their 16.5-hour rom-com movie marathon. Starting at 8:30 a.m. EST, they'll show "Little Black Book," "Made of Honor," "13 Going On 30," "Something Borrowed," "Crazy, Stupid Love" and "Friends With Benefits."

"Law & Order: SVU" Marathon on USA
It wouldn't be Sunday without an all-day "SVU" marathon on USA. Tune in, as per usual.

"Real Housewives of Atlanta" Marathon on Bravo
Starting at 10 a.m. EST, Bravo will host a 12-hour marathon of "Real Housewives of Atlanta" before the series' new episode debuts at 10 p.m. EST.

"The Gabby Douglas Story" on Lifetime
Okay, so you're into sports. Kind of. Well, really you're just into the Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas. The Lifetime original movie about her life will debut on Saturday, Feb. 1, but the network will replay it at 9 p.m. EST on Super Bowl Sunday.

Binge Watch Anything, Literally Anything
Forget primetime and cable. Press play on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime originals. You only have two weeks to catch up on "House of Cards" before Season 2 comes out, so you'd better hurry up.

Ugh, fine. Super Bowl XLVIII kicks off Sunday, Feb. 2, 6 p.m. EST on Fox.

'Breaking Bad' And 'Willy Wonka' Have More In Common Than You'd Think

$

The great thing about Walter White, and the character arc throughout "Breaking Bad," is that he can be easily compared to a variety of figures from pop culture.

Vince Gilligan first described Walt's transformation as "From Mr. Chips to Scarface," and the comparison between Walt and Al Pacino's infamous drug lord makes sense. Of course, another obvious and consistent parallel in the series involves poet Walt Whitman. First referenced on "Breaking Bad" when Gale recites the poet's "When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer" in Season 3, Whitman is mentioned again with a bathroom copy of "Leaves Of Grass," leading Hank to discover the real meaning of "W.W."

But there's still one striking comparison that is yet to have been explored in depth ... until now. Think back to when Hank first pondered the meaning of “W.W” in Gale’s lab notes. “W.W. Who do you figure that is? Woodrow Wilson? Willy Wonka?” Hank quipped.

tv show gifs

Hank's name-dropping of the famous fictional chocolatier may have gone over your head the first time, but those with double Ws have more in common than meets the eye. Gilligan's allusions to Walt Whitman were fairly blatant in the series, but there are also several Wonka references sprinkled throughout.

Where does "Willy Wonka" fit in the world of "Breaking Bad"?

walter white wonka

On the most basic level, the world of drugs and the world of candy have a lot in common. Mel Stuart's 1971 musical, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," has been linked to multiple drug references for its psychedelic visuals and symbolism. It's no surprise Gilligan gave the film a few shout outs through Hank and Badger.

Meth = Candy and Candy = Meth

Candy, like drugs, also has addictive qualities. Walt’s blue meth has junkies forking out ridiculous amounts cash just to get a taste, while kids will do anything to get their little fingers on a Wonka bar. Drugs and candy, candy and drugs. At first glance, you almost can't tell the difference.

tv show gifs

tv show gifs

Drugs and candy both get you "high."

Drugs get users high, but what about candy? Jesse's first hit of heroin is pretty similar to Charlie and Grandpa Joe's experience with the Fizzy Lifting Drinks, and they literally get high.

tv show gifs

tv show gifs

What's a "Candy Man"?

Sure, the Candy Man in "Willy Wonka" is a sweet candy shop owner who sings to the kids and passes out free treats. But Candy Man is also a popular moniker for a drug dealer, and there were plenty of those in "Breaking Bad."

Just passing out some meth …
tv show gifs

… We mean candy.

tv show gifs

But for real, White and Wonka actually have a lot in common.

They are both the heads of an empire, innovators behind the top-selling, most desirable products in their respective markets.

They both have a knack for chemistry and cooking.

... Chocolate factory. Same thing right?

tv show gifs

Both Walt and Wonka become a little maniacal and terrifying at times.

tv show gifs

They will also do anything to protect the product.

Wonka shuts down his factory for three years and has an employee (Slugworth) pose as his enemy to test the children’s honesty. And what will Walt do to protect his precious drug business? He'll pretty much tell any lie imaginable, fake a fugue state and kill everyone in his way. When it comes to enemies, these two have the perfect recipes on hand.

tv show gifs

tv show gifs

Over the course of Walt’s evolution from timid high school chemistry teacher to drug kingpin, he not only becomes more possessive of his product, but also of his money. Near the end of the series when Jesse wants out, Walt threatens to not give him his well-deserved cut if he leaves, and there's something very familiar about the way he says it ...

Ah, that's right, Wonka explodes in the exact same way toward Charlie as a final morality test. But neither Charlie nor Jesse are swayed by avarice and threats.

Does this mean Jesse is to Walt as Charlie is to Wonka?

Just as Wonka denies Charlie a lifetime supply of chocolate he rightfully won, Walt refuses Jesse his well-deserved earnings out of anger and greed. Both Charlie and Jesse are the younger, morally sound and honest protégés, the most compassionate characters in their respective film and series. Wonka ends up givings his factory to Charlie, while Walt, in a way, gives Jesse his most prized possession, a talent for chemistry, by teaching him the craft.

Furthermore, in the end they both do the right thing: Charlie returns the Everlasting Gobstopper to Wonka rather than give it to Slugworth, and Jesse tries to redeem himself by giving away his drug money to those in need.

tv show gifs

While W.W. can stand for a lot of things, there's no denying that there's a bit of Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka in Bryan Cranston's Walter White. The connection is pretty clear; clear as what now?

Exactly.

"Haven" fans sweating that tense season finale cliffhanger moment needn't fear. Syfy has made a major commitment to the hit series. Not only did they renew the show for a fifth season, but they doubled the order, giving "Haven's" fifth season a whopping 26 episodes. Of course, there's a catch.

As part of the announcement, the network explained that the show will be broken up into two 13-episode half-seasons. In other words, it's kind of a two-season renewal, except that it's not. Entertainment Weekly suggested that this may have been a money-saving move by the network. As the cost of television productions go up with each season, making the next two years essentially one long season keeps prices fixed.

Even more, there's a reasonable chance that the cast originally signed up for five seasons. If they were to make this a fifth and sixth season, then they'd have to renegotiate contracts with the cast to get them to come back for that sixth season. This way, everyone is locked in. This makes us wonder how long it will be before networks start renewing hit shows for 100+-episode "seasons" that last five years.

Part 1 of "Haven" Season 5 kicks off in Fall 2014, with the back half set for 2015.
