B.C.'s Thriving Jade Industry Is A Family Affair In 'Jade Fever'

Jade City is located on the Cassiar highway, which the Americans use to enter Alaska. It didn't take long for this tiny mining community to become a world famous tourist stop. My father started mining around Jade City in the 1970s and retired in 1992.

My husband Robin and I have taken ownership of the Cassiar Mountain Jade store and set up Dease Lake Jade Mining, all with the help of our family. We're the only family based mining company that we know of. There isn't a large scale in mining in the jade industry -- that is why it's still here!

We mine from May to October with our sons -- Josh, who operates heavy equipment, and Justin, who cuts the jade so we can grade the quality of it. And our grandchildren are our best marketers and have entertained the tourists in our store since they were born.

Jade can be turned into various goods including jewellery, Inukshuk puzzles, sun catchers, jade pet rocks, jade plates and bowls. The plates come in all shapes and sizes, from fish-like forms to bears and leaves. We also make head stones and urns for ashes. Anything done out of stone, marble or glass can be made out of jade, and if it can't be done -- we'll invent a way to do it!

Canada has some of the best jade in the world -- and we are proud of it. The jade mining industry is estimated to be worth billions of dollars. On average, the estimated price for top quality jade can be as high as $1,000 per kilo.

Mining jade is hard work, and it's no easy task to find the good stuff. We are four generations, happy to be making our livings in the jade mining industry -- and we have the fever alright! We didn't realize it would be so contagious, though.

MAKING 'JADE FEVER'
For the last two years, we've been on a crazy ride making a TV show with Discovery about our even crazier lives during the mining season. It all started when Robin did a news interview about mining in northern B.C. and the reporter didn't know that jade was mined in Canada. The last thing we expected out of that was for Hollywood to come calling.

We were just about to sign a deal when we received a phone call from OMNI, a Canadian production company. They told us they were interested in creating a factual drama about jade mining and asked us to hear their ideas. We agreed to meet him and decided to work with them and go Canadian (sorry, Hollywood!).

We were excited to be part of this show, but petrified of looking like crazy hillbillies. We may be that way, but showing the rest of the world was another thing. But we went for it, and it's been a wild ride.

Half the time the crew ends up being more entertaining than we are. They are the butts of many jokes from our miners. They've lost tires on quads, and have been taken into areas that are so bumpy that one of them was ejected from the vehicle while driving!

We spent so much time working with the cameramen every day that they quickly became our second family.

Jade Fever on Discovery is a different kind of reality show, unlike anything else out there. There is no scripting in what we do. We are followed around on a daily basis, going about our own lives, and end up making a television show from it.

Frankly, we don't know what attracts people to the show. We are just a bunch of misfits living the mining dream out in the middle of nowhere and having fun doing it. And now Season 1 has been nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Factual Program or Series!

CANADIAN GREEN
We're sitting on 75 per cent of the world's nephrite jade deposits -- some of the toughest stone in the world -- and if it weren't for the local miners in B.C., there would be no local jade for sale in Canada.

Mining keeps some beautiful jade in our country for our local carvers. The impact of jade on local economy is huge. In our economy when there are hundreds of layoffs, we are doing the opposite and growing larger. We are putting more people to work mining, manufacturing the jade here in Jade City, and operating our retail store, and as a result putting food on the table for hundreds of people in our country.

Every year there's increasingly more and more foreign investors in the jade fields, which is why we have taken on Chinese partners on a couple of our jade sites. It took a long time to find the right team to work with and at first, and it was not easy doing business with the Chinese. They operate differently in their culture, but we have learned together over the past four years and have managed to do some great work together as a team.

Now, I need to get back to the dig. There's jade in them thar hills!

The Canadian Behind 'The Sound of Music's' Historic Oscar Wins

$

Captain von Trapp seizes the Nazi flag obscenely hanging on his front balcony for all to see -- and Christopher Plummer rips it down with the swift fury of a man who will not see his family befouled. He tears the offending symbol to shreds as his children return to greet him and his new bride, their former governess, Maria -- played flawlessly by Julie Andrews. The Nazi Party has taken advantage of Captain von Trapp's honeymoon, and Christopher Plummer will make them pay.

It's an electrifying moment from The Sound of Music -- the most beloved Best Picture Oscar-winner of all time, and maybe the most beloved movie of all time.

The Canada connection -- Christopher Plummer, who played the proud Austrian naval hero Captain Georg von Trapp -- was born in Toronto and raised in Senneville, Quebec, on the western tip of the Island of Montreal. Plummer is the great-grandson of John Abbott, who was Canada's third prime minister, and the Abbott family raised the young Plummer after his parents divorced.

The Sound of Music was cinematic solace in 1965, that frightened and helpless time right between president John F. Kennedy's assassination and Robert Kennedy's death in Los Angeles just a few years later.

With the Vietnam war shifting into deadly high gear, families and neighbourhoods across the country lined up to buy tickets weeks in advance for the optimistic, song-filled big screen musical. Our entire family drove 44 miles to see it at the Warner Cinerama Theater in Fresno, California. Packed house.

The Sound of Music won five Academy Awards exactly 50 years ago in 1966 -- with nominee Julie Andrews losing to Julie Christie's performance in Darling. To be fair, only a year earlier Andrews had nabbed the Best Actress Oscar for Mary Poppins.

Warner Brothers Studio had passed Andrews over that same year to cast Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady , the role Andrews had created on the Broadway stage.

Holding her Poppins Oscar that year, Andrews impishly said, "Finally, my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and who made all this possible in the first place... Mr. Jack Warner."

Cut to Jack Warner at his table wiping away crocodile tears and laughing. Hooray for Hollywood.

Christopher Plummer was unhappy with his participation in the icky sweet musical, dismissing The Sound of Music in an interview with the BBC as "so awful and sentimental and gooey."

He had just finished shooting an important epic, The Fall of the Roman Empire , with Alec Guinness and James Mason, and recently Plummer had received an Emmy nod for his title role performance in the BBC's acclaimed Hamlet at Elsinore co-starring with Michael Caine and Robert Shaw -- which much have been interesting during tea breaks.

Given the sugary quicksand surrounding the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein stage version of The Sound of Music, Andrews gave Plummer credit for the success and balance of the movie, telling the Museum of Living History in Washington D.C., "It was his performance that was the glue, the vinegar that held the film together."

When Plummer sees the wild tribe of von Trapp children sail up in the family canoe while shouting ribald oaths and singing with Julie Andrews at the helm, Plummer plays it so subtly you don't know whether he wants to murder them or embrace them. He's that good in this movie. But things turn ugly faster than you can say "Do-Re-Mi."

"Don't you DARE tell me about my son!" he thunders at Maria when she chides him for parental neglect after the children had left them alone. It's played as a boiling scene of poorly restrained rage and Andrews and Plummer carry it off perfectly.

"I am not finished yet, Captain..." Maria asserts.

"Oh yes you are, Captain!... er, fraulein..." Plummer retorts to Maria, Freudian slipping all the way, in frustrated, complicated triumph.

"You brought music back into the house. I had... forgotten," he says later by way of apology after their fight.

Plummer's performance as the Captain is said to be a lot sterner than real Georg von Trapp, by all accounts a warm family man. Director Robert Wise refused requests to soften Plummer's gruff authoritarianism and it makes Plummer's transformation near the end of the movie all the more rewarding.

Audiences have long assumed "Eidelweiss" is the Austrian national anthem -- but it's not. "Eidelweiss" was one of the very last songs from the partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who wrote the lyrics and died only months after The Song of Music's Broadway debut.

Plummer's vocal solo with guitar is the dramatic anchor in the climactic festival scene as the entire audience sings along with him in a powerful moment symbolizing Austrian loyalty to country and patriotism in the face of the recent Anschluss -- or unholy alliance -- with Nazi Germany.

Austrian roads and borders closed by the Nazis? No problem. In real life, the von Trapp family simply boarded a train to Italy, but the inspiring finale for The Sound of Music sees them escape over the Austrian Alps.

Ironically, that scene was shot on the Obersalzburg near Berchtesgaden -- site of Adolph Hitler's lair, the Eagle's Nest. The children? "They'll be all right," the Captain assures Maria. After all, they were raised with Christopher Plummer's boat whistle discipline.

In his 2008 autobiography In Spite of Myself, Plummer at last came to terms with The Sound of Music's overwhelming worldwide popularity. In fact, Plummer's campaign for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in 2011's Beginners saw some expert cinematic fence-mending -- with Plummer reaffirming his appreciation for the movie he once dismissed as The Sound of Mucus.

Sure enough, the 82-year-old Plummer became the oldest person in Academy history to win an Oscar, purring to the award, "You're only two years older than me darling... where have you been all of my life?"

Netflix Canada: What's Good In March 2016?

$
0
0
March is a month of firsts on Netflix Canada.

First episodes of various new seasons, that is. Second, third and fourth episodes, too.

The highlight of the month is season four of "House of Cards," which begins streaming on March 4.

The new season picks up after Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) was in the middle of his presidential re-election campaign. But there was trouble on the hustings ... and in his marriage.

When we last saw the first couple, his wife and partner Claire (Robin Wright Penn) was leaving him. Viewers have yet to see if the series will pick up where it left off.

And that's just one title to look forward to in a month that will keep you glued to your television set.

TV

"Daredevil," season 2

Season two of this Marvel series sees blind lawyer Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) taking up the mantle as the hero of Hell's Kitchen once again. This time, he has to go face-to-face with Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), better known as "The Punisher."

"Pee-wee's Big Holiday"

One of television's most popular man-children (Paul Reubens) makes his triumphant return to screens in this Netflix original film, in which he takes a holiday to the Big Apple, leaving his small town for the first time.

Movies

"Ant-Man"

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" disappointed, but this offbeat Marvel offering was a pleasant surprise that didn't shy from its ridiculous premise. Paul Rudd plays a thief who is enlisted by a genius inventor (Michael Douglas) to steal back a suit that can shrink a person down to a microscopically small size.

"Spy"

One of the most underrated comedies of 2015 stars Melissa McCarthy as a CIA desk jockey who is thrust into undercover work, with disastrous results.

Basic Cable TV Is Something Bell Doesn't Want You To Tell You About: Report

Canadian cable providers must make a basic package available to subscribers for no more than $25 per month as of March 1.

But one of them is doing its damndest not to tell customers about it, a CBC News report suggests.

A Bell training document obtained by CBC dissuades sales staff from pushing a new, $24.95 "Starter TV" basic cable package. It would give subscribers access to approximately 20 Canadian channels as well as pick-and-pay options.

"Do not promote the Starter TV package. There will be no advertising, and this package should only be discussed if the customer initiates the conversation," the document reads.

The package is set to be launched Sunday, just two days before such bundles are required, said the CBC report.

Bell spokeswoman Jacqueline Michelis wouldn't comment on its new cable package, but did tell The Huffington Post Canada via email, "We'll follow all CRTC rules, as always."

New, cheaper cable packages are becoming available after the CRTC ruled that companies have to make an "entry-level service offering" available to all customers as of March 1.

Such packages can be sold for no more than $25 per month, but that doesn't include equipment rentals.

Affordable cable bundles

The bundles must include "all local and regional Canadian television stations and provincial or territorial educational services" required under broadcasting rules, the CRTC in its decision last year.

It issued the decision in response to customer concerns that they were paying too much for cable bundles.

This week, the CRTC reminded TV providers that the new package must be promoted to customers.

While Bell has yet to unveil its starter package, Rogers has released its own bundle online.

Channels available in the package include CBC, CHCH, CTV, Global and Omni. U.S. stations ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS are also included. Subscribers can add "theme packs" featuring sports or drama and comedy channels.

"We're interested in making sure people have the right fit for them," Rogers spokesman Aaron Lazarus told HuffPost Canada in a phone interview.

Asked whether Rogers would be promoting the "Starter" package to customers, or whether clients would have to ask about it themselves, Lazarus said sales staff are "more interested in what you are looking for and what your needs are."

"Our agents will start by asking what are you looking for, what kinds of channels are you interested in? And all the options are there," he said.

Telus, meanwhile, will launch its new "Skinny Basic" package on March 1, spokeswoman Liz Sauvé wrote to HuffPost in an email. She did not address whether the company will be actively promoting it to customers.

Chris Rock's 2016 Oscars Monologue Attacks OscarsSoWhite, AskHerMore, Jada And More

$

While hosting the Oscars in 2005, Chris Rock memorably fired shots at Jude Law, but this time around, he took aim at two controversial targets and hot topics: #OscarsSoWhite and #AskHerMore.

The four-time Emmy winner, who imposed a media "blackout" on his own pre-Oscar press, attacked the Oscar nominee race scandal head-on by calling the Academy Awards the "White People's Choice Awards" right off the bat. Yes, Rock's scalding remarks were worth the wait.

For the second year in a row, the Academy Awards did not honour any non-white Oscars. This fact was oft-cited in the trending topic "#OscarsSoWhite," and was immediately addressed by Rock.

"You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn't even get this job, so y'all would be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now," said Rock, referring to last year's host.

Rock also called out his fellow actors, like Tyrese Gibson, who begged for him to step down from his hosting post in order to show solidarity with other actors of colour.

"Only unemployed people [tell] you to quit something," said Rock, before joking "the last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart."

Later, Rock pointed out that the "no-black nominees thing" had definitely happened "at least 71" times in the past and was not newsworthy because "[black people] had real things to protest at the time. We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won Best Cinematography."

But he did not stop there. The comedian also mocked Jada Pinkett Smith for her broadcast boycott.

"Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties," joked Rock, who referred to Pinkett Smith as being an actress from a TV show. "I wasn't invited! Though, that's not an invitation I would turn down."

Rock continued, and mocked her feelings that it was "unfair that Will was this good and didn't get nominated" for "Concussion," saying it was also not fair that "Will was paid 20 million for 'Wild Wild West.'"

With that torch lit, Rock said this year's "In Memoriam" package would "[just be] black people who were shot by the cops on the way to the movies." He also made a call for having black categories, or for gender equality among the nominees.

"Robert De Niro has never said, 'I'm going to slow this acting down so Meryl Streep should show up,'" said Rock.

One of his black category ideas?

"Best Black friend," said Rock, before proclaiming Wanda Sykes would win for the "18th year in a row."

However, to Rock, the Oscars nomination controversy is not "burning cross racist" or "fetch me some lemonade racist," but "sorority racist."

"It's not about boycotting anything; we want black actors to have the same opportunities," said Rock.

"You know, Leo gets a great part every year. All of you guys get great parts all the time. Look at Jamie Foxx. Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors in the world. Jamie Foxx is so good in Ray that they went to the hospital and unplugged the real Ray Charles, like we don't need two of these!"

The 51-year-old finished his set by poking fun, once again, at outrage culture and the supposedly sexist uproar surrounding the questions women are asked on the red carpet, best known as #AskHerMore.

"Everything's not sexism, everything's not racism," said Rock.

chris rock card

"They ask the men more because every guy there is wearing the exact same thing. If George Clooney showed up with a lime green tux on and a swan coming out his a--, they'd be like, what you wearing George?"

His endless mockery of these hot-button awards season discussion points got big laughs from the A-list audience.

Later in the show, he continued to hammer and highlight the silliness of the race controversy by showing a pre-taped package with comedians Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Whoopi Goldberg and himself in small roles in Oscar-nominated films to show that once again, "If you're a black actor, just getting the opportunity to be in a movie can be a struggle."

But not all of the related jokes were a hit.

The continuous jabs at #OscarsSoWhite hit a sour note about an hour into the broadcast, when, in a pre-recorded bit, Angela Bassett appeared to honour an actor for Black History Month. That actor happened to star in two films, "Enemy of the State" and "Shark Tank," leading many to assume she was going to gush about the talents of Will Smith. Instead, she was there to pay homage to the career of Jack Black, who also starred in both films.

Oscar 2016 Winners List: 'Spotlight' Wins, Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Triumphs

$

Oscars host Chris Rock (and many others) may be furious about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, but the Academy Awards are crazy for Furiosa and her film "Mad Max: Fury Road."

The Australian action epic nearly swept the night's technical categories with six wins, and one of its Oscar-winning Sound Editing technicians called out the movie's momentum by shouting "f--king Mad Max" during his acceptance speech.

Yet, those would be the only wins for the road race thriller as "Spotlight" defeated it and earned the Oscar for Best Picture.

For the night's lead actor categories, there were no shocking moments. Both Brie Larson ("Room") and Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Revenant") won in their respective categories, as they have all season long.

DiCaprio, a known climate change advocate, completed his acceptance speech with an environmental plea, saying "let us not take this planet for granted" and "I do not take this night for granted."

This marks DiCaprio's first Oscar win out of his six career nominations, which included five honours for acting and one for producing the Best Picture nominee, "The Wolf of Wall Street." His two-time co-star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Kate Winslet had tears in her eyes during his acceptance speech:

Later, the pair shared a tender moment after his win:

Alicia Vikander also went home a winner, picking up her first Oscar trophy for her first-ever nomination in "The Danish Girl." The 27-year-old won in the Best Supporting Actress category, and kissed long-rumoured boyfriend and Best Actor nominee Michael Fassbender prior to accepting her award.

But it would not be the Oscars without a statue surprise. The presumed Best Supporting Actor frontrunner Sylvester Stallone lost to the critic's darling, Mark Rylance, of "Bridge of Spies" fame. Stallone, who received a standing ovation after winning at the Golden Globes in January, won at the Critics' Choice awards that same month. However, he was not nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where Idris Elba won for "Beasts of No Nation."

Rylance's triumph is not unprecedented, though. The Broadway veteran took home a BAFTA award for his work two weeks ago.

Canada also had a strong showing at the 88th Academy Awards. Canadian documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won her second career Oscar for Best Documentary - Short Subject for "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness."

Lady Gaga's 'Til It Happens To You' Oscars 2016 Performance Included Survivors Of Sexual Assault

For the second straight year, Lady Gaga's Oscars performance completely stole the show.

The Grammy and Golden Globe winner poured her heart out while performing her Oscar-nominated song "Til It Happens To You" from "The Hunting Ground" — a song about sexual assault — on the piano. Lady Gaga's emotional rendition was accompanied by an incredible statement of solidarity, as she was surrounded by dozens of sexual assault survivors on stage. Several of the men and women had messages on their arms for their alleged attackers, ranging from "Survivor" to "Not Your Fault."

It was a moving display that brought the audience to their feet, including Best Supporting Actress nominees Rachel McAdams and Kate Winslet, who applauded after the performance with tears in their eyes.

But it was Best Actress winner Brie Larson who took her gratitude and appreciation of this powerful message even further. Larson was captured on camera hugging each of the survivors as they left the stage.

Lady Gaga was introduced by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, an advocate for the "It's On Us" campaign, a campus sexual assault prevention initiative.

Prior to her performance, Biden spoke to his commitment to this cause, saying, "We must and we can change the culture so that no abused woman or man... should ever feel they have to ask themselves, 'what did I do?'"

Biden and Lady Gaga's ode to survivors also struck a chord with Kesha. The musician has made headlines of her own this month after she was denied an injunction against working with music producer Dr. Luke, her frequent collaborator and alleged verbal, sexual and emotional abuser.

Kesha tweets:

This is certainly not a random endorsement either, as last week, Lady Gaga publicly supported Kesha in her ongoing legal battle against Sony Music and Dr. Luke.

All this, as hours before her Oscars performance, Lady Gaga gave another shout out to Kesha, saying her song would also be an ode to her struggle:

What did you think of Lady Gaga's performance? Sound off in the comments below.

Sam Smith Dedicates His Oscar To The LGBT Community

Sam Smith didn't just accept an Oscar for himself on Sunday night.

The openly gay singer-songwriter won a Best Original Song Oscar alongside Jimmy Napes for "The Writing's On the Wall" from the James Bond movie "Spectre."

And when it came time to pick up his statuette, he dedicated it to LGBT people everywhere.

"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar," Smith said.

"If this is the case, even if this isn't the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.

"I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day."

Smith, however, isn't the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award. Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar for "Milk," about LGBT activist Harvey Milk, in 2009.

McKellen had actually asked why no openly gay man had ever won the Best Actor Oscar in an interview with The Guardian. "I wonder if that is prejudice or chance," he said to the publication.

Smith's song won out over Lady Gaga and Diane Warren for "Til It Happens to You" from the campus sex assault documentary "The Hunting Ground," as well as The Weeknd's "Earned It" for "Fifty Shades Of Grey," J. Ralph and Anohni's "Manta Ray" from 'Racing Extinction" and David Lang's "Simple Song #3" for "Youth."

Lady Gaga delivered a powerful performance of the song that preceded Smith's win. And he made sure to praise her work as he accepted the award.

"To all the nominees, you're incredible. Gaga, you're incredible," he said.

The Oscars Tackled Their Diversity Problem In A Big Way

Leonardo DiCaprio. The end.

Nah, I suppose the Oscars had way more in store for us aside from King Leonardo DiCaprio (this is your cue to bow down) winning his first Oscar. They really pushed the #OscarsSoWhite thing; far enough that the eyes of both parties should have been opened by the end of the show. While #OscarsSoWhite was embraced with a bear hug, Jada Pinkett-Smith and her efforts to boycott the Oscars were taught a lesson or two.

Chris Rock (the killer host who should take the reigns on every award show that exists) opened up the night with too many good lines to remember. My favourite was when he addressed Jada saying, "Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties... I wasn't invited". And after I managed to catch my breath from that he addressed sexism on the red carpet -- specifically the "Who/what are you wearing?" question that seems to only be aimed at women. He said that wouldn't be a problem "if George Clooney showed up wearing a lime green tux and had a swan coming out of his ass". This can all be summed up with the fact that Chris Rock and the Academy didn't give a damn what people thought. I think this was the most real award show I've ever laid my eyes on. I liked it.

In the midst of all of the jokes regarding racism, Stacey Dash returned to the face of the earth to make an appearance that the whole world could do without to wish everyone a "Happy Black History Month". I'm still scratching my head figuring out why she was even there. WHY?!?!

Some better moments of the night, keeping with the focus on the lack of diversity in Hollywood, include multiple black actors and actresses changing things up in 2016 Oscar nominated films. Let's just say the films were 1000 times better and not just because Whoopie Goldberg, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones and Chris Rock were in them. Okay, maybe I fibbed just a tad. There was also the time Chris Rock interviewed moviegoers in Compton about white people films. They were clueless. There's a high possibility that it could have been scripted, or at least that was the vibe I got while watching. And we can't forget the moment Chris Rock became "Best Dad of the Year" when he made a bunch of rich actors feel guilty and buy cookies from his daughter's girl scout group. Wise move, Chris. Wise move.

I feel like there were a few things that happened in between all of the Hollywood is racist talk, but they'll be overshadowed by all of the things that I mentioned above (this includes Leo winning his first Oscar). For example, Spotlight won Best Picture. Brie Larson won Best Actress. Mark Rylance caught us all off guard and snubbed Sylvester Stallone by winning Best Supporting Actor. Jacob Tremblay won an Oscar for being adorable (this happened in my mind and not in real life just to clarify). Lady Gaga made us feel all of the feelings when she performed her Oscar nominated song "Till It Happens To You." But none of that matters (okay, maybe people will remember Lady Gaga's captivating performance). It didn't even feel like an award show. It felt more like a 3 and a half hour guilt trip.

It's understandable to have it in the opening and a few snarky comments here and there. Maybe I'm just not used to it being talked about this much and I'm opening my eyes to the problem. Or maybe they just dragged it out way too long. Regardless, the point was made and there are going to be a lot of changes made between now and the 2016/2017 award season (I can't believe this season is already over).

What did you guys think of the show in general? Do you think they did the hot topic of this awards season justice?

Comedian Debra DiGiovanni Delves Into The Science of Funny

For Debra DiGiovanni, speaking to a full house is much more appealing than speaking to a group of six.

The visual artist turned comedian has been doing stand-up for more than 15 years. While she knows that she's most comfortable when behind a microphone, the industry and audiences are still getting accustomed to seeing more women take the stage.

In the world of stand-up comedy, does the person delivering the joke influence how audiences react? In this episode of Her Story, we delve into the science of funny and talk to Debra about her experience as a female comedian.

Stand-up comedy is harder than you think.

There's the obvious pressure that comes with being on stage in front of an audience that's waiting for you to make them laugh. But then there's the fact that writing jokes for the stage calls for a specific strategy.

Someone who knows how to have a group of people in stitches at a party can't necessarily get audiences to react the same way. It's something many people don't realize until they intentionally analyze it or try it themselves. For me, it was the latter.

I used to work on a cruise ship as part of the entertainment staff: calling bingo, hosting trivia and leading conga lines. In the middle of my contract, I was promoted to being the ship's comedy club manager. I was nervous. No kidding -- it was far from the pool-side gig I had come to know so well. I was now charge of introducing the headliners and warming up a late-night audience.

Like many people, I had a repertoire of anecdotes that I knew were crowd-pleasers at parties, but to my surprise they didn't land with audiences when I told them on stage.

Talking to Debra made me feel better though.

"I still bomb. I still have terrible sets. Even 15 years in. You still have bad shows sometimes and it's good for you," she says.

It was. I was motivated to work with comedians to rejig my stories so they'd translate as stand-up bits. I didn't know it at the time, but I was just making certain aspects more extreme in order to create a "benign violation." It's a theory outlined in The Humor Code, co-written by behavioural scientist Peter McGraw, who tries to explain the science of funny.

"People laugh at things that are wrong, yet OK. Things that are threatening yet safe. Things that don't make sense, yet make sense," he says. "It's these two perceptions that, when brought together, create this positive emotional effect."

Debra clearly gets it. She recently completed her first solo national tour with Just For Laughs! and is a three-time recipient of the Canadian Comedy Award for best female comic.

"When people applaud for you... it just satisfies the soul," she says. "I think the first time you really connect with the crowd, it's magic."

'Big Brother Canada' Season 4 Week 1 Recap: Wildcards

**NOTE: This recap contains spoilers for "Big Brother Canada" season 4.

"Big Brother Canada" season four kicked off with a bang on Wednesday. Not only was a surprise houseguest introduced at the 11th hour, we also got the opportunity to vote in two additional international houseguests.

It all started after the first 14 houseguests arrived at the BBCAN Grand. Host Arisa Cox announced to the audience that Philippe Paquette's younger brother, Nicholas, would also be in the house. Nicholas was also unaware his older bro was a "Big Brother Canada" contestant.

Despite the brothers pretending they didn't know each other, the jig was up when Cox explained to the houseguests that the two were not only siblings, but they would be playing as one person the entire season. To start, Nicholas participated in the HOH competition on behalf of the two.

big brother canada

The family alliance clearly startled the other houseguests, who guessed the brothers would win the first competition of the season. Unfortunately for the two, they did not end up winning and were forced to spend 24-hours in solitary confinement.

While winning HOH is usually a good thing, most contestants try to throw the first one, since it can put a target on your back from the get go. Fort McMurray's Loveita Adams didn't quite see it that way and negotiated her way to the HOH suite.

Sensing the impending showmance between Kelsey Faith and cowboy Jared Kesler, Adams set her target on breaking the pair up early by putting Faith on the block with 'pawn' Paige Distranski.

big brother canada recap

When the two lost the POV competition to the Paquette brothers, who left the nominations as is, 19-year-old Distranski was sent packing as most pawns do.

But as one walked out the door, two more walked in. After Canada's vote, "Big Brother Australia"'s Tim Dormer and "Big Brother U.K."'s Nikki Grahame were sent into the house to compete as international houseguests — we're not sure if contestants inside the house realize how big of a threat Dormer can be.

The Aussie became known as Australia's biggest reality star after he won season 10 of "Big Brother Australia" in 2013.

How will the two new houseguests fair in the Canadian version of this classic reality series? Only time (and the live feeds) will tell!

"Big Brother Canada" Season 4 will continue to air three nights a week on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays on Global.

Why Chris Rock's Oscar Jokes Got The Wrong Laughs

$
0
0
As the evening approached for the start of the Oscars, I found myself glued to the television, waiting to see Chris Rock and the Oscars production team address the elephant in the room.

Thinking about all the possible ways they could bring light to the lack of diversity in the Oscars, I started thinking that they might possibly start off with clips from movies featuring outstanding black actors and actresses or even something about modern day slavery showing how blacks have been deprived of equal opportunities over the years. I even thought that perhaps they could just have the president of the academy address the issue at the beginning and then move on with the show.

To my horror, the issue was used as part of several "comedy acts" instead. While Chris Rock, in his silly mind, thought he was educating his audience about something that has affected his own people for hundreds of years, it probably blew over most of their heads because the room erupted in laughter each time.

When he spoke about some of the worst hate crimes experienced by black people, Rock made sure to let these stars know that our ancestors were "too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer". How did they react to the "grandmother swinging from a tree"? Laughter!

He also got the room super excited when he pointed out that, "This year in the 'In Memoriam' package, it's just gonna be black people that were shot by the cops on their way to the movies." Results? You guessed it right! Laughter!!!

Chris Rock also made sure to 'read' all the people who called on him to boycott the show, asking the question, "How come it's only unemployed people that tell you to quit something?" Well Chris... those unemployed people are part of a race that has been deprived of everything since the day some white men decided to strip your people of anything that would improve their lives and use our black men and women to make themselves rich.

With my mixed feelings I decided to go through my Facebook timeline to see what others thought about the show so far. I saw many people applauding Chris Rock for his bold step in addressing the issue of racism and the lack of diversity in his opening. Then there were the confused souls like myself who kept wondering if blacks were actually being made fun of.

That's when Stacey Dash was introduced. Yes! STACEY DASH! The same woman who called for the end of Black History Month, BET Awards and everything with a touch of Black!

As a black woman who was bullied and laughed at simply because of the colour of my skin, especially as a child, I felt extremely uncomfortable watching all of this play out. It reminded me of the kids at my elementary school who would shout "Blackie! Blackie! Blackie!" while laughing and pointing at me. I knew I was black, but I also knew that I was being mocked and the matter was always trivialized with other students pointing out that I was indeed black. So why did I feel embarrassed every time it happened? That's exactly how I felt watching what I could of the Oscars.

There is absolutely nothing funny about blacks being gunned down or lynched or the poor unemployed people who called for Chris Rock to boycott the show. In fact, when I heard those calls I disagreed and encouraged the black community of actors and actresses to support their friends and show the academy that they can be the bigger people despite the obvious.

Oscars 2016 was a slap in the face in my humble opinion. From the opening jokes to the woman who has sold her black soul appearing on stage, all of it left a bitter taste in my mouth. It was far from amusing, but more of a 'respected organization' and a comedian who I once looked up to rubbing salt in our wounds. #wearenotamusedoscars

'Game Of Thrones' Season 6 Trailer Reminds Us That All Men Must Die

"Game of Thrones" constantly reminds us that all men must die.

And their deaths will see them suffer horribly, if the trailer for the HBO show's sixth season is any indication.

The latest trailer, which was released on Facebook Tuesday, shows scenes that have us jumping with excitement for the upcoming season.

In it, the red priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten) appears dejected that her visions of victory for Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) turned out to be a lie.

Jon Snow's (Kit Harington) body lies dead and cold at Castle Black.

And in one brief shot, Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) comes face to face with the Night's King, leader of the fearsome White Walkers.

game of thrones

But that doesn't scratch the surface of the conflicts expected to unfold when "Game of Thrones" returns on April 24.

The biggest question surrounds Jon Snow's mortality — whether he might come back, or he's gone for good.

Harington has confirmed he will appear in the sixth season — as a corpse.

O.J. Simpson's Ex-Manager Says He Knows Who Committed Murders

The murder mystery surrounding the deaths of O.J. Simpson's ex-wife and her friend continues to unfold over two decades later.

Simpson's ex-manager Norman Pardo said he knows who's behind Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman's deaths, in an interview with KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO on Tuesday.

“I know who did it and I knοw why they did it,” he said.

“I just can’t disclose it right now.”

Pardo said he tried to bring this information to the police, "but they took all my stuff regarding the incidents.

"We had people working on it, and when we talked to the police about it, they raided my office and took it all," he said.

The murder trial, which saw O.J. found not guilty, is seeing renewed attention thanks to the FX TV show "American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson," and after a knife was reportedly found at his former home.

Los Angeles police detectives do not think the knife is linked to the killings, but they're currently testing it for DNA, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Simpson, who is in prison on armed robbery and kidnapping charges, isn't losing sleep over the knife, but he worries it could hurt his chances of being paroled next year, Pardo told People.

"Everybody I've spoken with says he's just ignoring it. He's not talking about it," he said.

Even if the weapon proves to be connected to Brown Simpson and Goldman's murders, there's no way O.J. could be tried again on the same charges due to a legal concept called double jeopardy, E! News reported.

"The U.S. constitution prohibits the government from trying somebody twice for the same crime," criminal defense lawyer Troy Slaten told the website.

"So even if we find new, incontrovertible evidence that proves his guilt, 100 per cent, he cannot be tried again, and the federal government cannot try him either."

Simpson was charged with the murders of Nicole and Goldman, but a jury later found him not guilty in what some call the "Trial of the Century." (Photo: AP)

This isn't the first time that Pardo has challenged public narratives around his former client.

He said in a 2014 interview with HuffPost Live that the former football player did not write the 2008 book "If I Did It", a fictional account of the murders, and was instead paid US$600,000 to say that he did.

Mike Myers, Michael J. Fox Praise Justin Trudeau At White House State Dinner

At least two notable Canadian actors shared their praise for Justin Trudeau as they attended a state dinner alongside the prime minister on Thursday.

Mike Myers and Michael J. Fox were among many high-profile guests in attendance as U.S. President Barack Obama hosted Trudeau and his family, in the first official visit for a Canadian prime minister in almost two decades.

Myers told reporters that Justin's father Pierre was his prime minister for 14 years, and that he considers himself a "Trudeauvian democrat."

He added that he's "thrilled" to have Justin as his prime minister.

Myers then cut a diplomatic figure when asked for his thoughts on the current U.S. presidential election:

"One of the things that Canada can offer the world is civility, and one of the great legacies that Canada may leave is that the strength of a democracy is not how well we agree but how well we disagree."

You can watch Myers' comments in the video captured below for Facebook Live by HuffPost Canada's Ottawa bureau chief Althia Raj (Myers appears around the 39-minute mark):

Asked what he thought of Trudeau, he said he was "cool," and that he was a big fan of Pierre when he was in office.

Myers and Fox are in the company of other Canadian celebs at the state dinner, including actress Sandra Oh, actor Ryan Reynolds, and "Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels.

Last year, on the eve of the Canadian election, he appeared on "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" — defying a Canadian law that prohibits non-residents from telling people how to vote.

"Don't vote for Stephen Harper," Myers said.

Canadian Screen Awards 2016: 'Room,' Jacob Tremblay, 'Schitt's Creek' Shine At The 'Candys'

TORONTO — The Canadian Screen Awards, or should we say the Candys, has made plenty of room for "Room'' — a taut mother-son drama that emerged as a late-blooming Oscar contender and made a star out of its nine-year-old leading man Jacob Tremblay.

The Canada-Ireland co-production scored nine wins including best picture, best director for Dublin's Lenny Abrahamson, best adapted screenplay for Emma Donoghue, best actress for U.S. starlet and Oscar-winner Brie Larson and best actor for Vancouver's Tremblay.

The pint-sized breakout, outfitted for Sunday's bash in a dark three-piece pinstriped suit with a red bow tie, claimed the top acting prize and plenty of awwws from the celebrity audience.

"This is amazing. I can't believe a kid like me won against a bunch of amazing talent. Christopher Plummer, you're a legend,'' said Tremblay, singling out his 86-year-old rival and thanking voters for "the Candy.''

"I'm not the best at sports. I'm never going to win the Stanley Cup or a gold medal but I love acting and to win an award for something that I love is super special to me.''

Norm Macdonald coins sweet new nickname

Credit show host Norm Macdonald with championing a new name for the Canadian Screen Awards — the Candy, for the late comic John Candy.

During his opening monologue, the standup star and former "Saturday Night Live'' regular urged the star-studded array of presenters — including Helen Shaver, Catherine O'Hara and Donald Sutherland — to use the shorter, quippier name.

"I mean, who doesn't love John Candy?'' Macdonald said.

Most obliged.

Vancouver-bred Tremblay was the first as he handed the best TV drama actor award to "Orphan Black'' actor Ari Millen, preceding that with a joke about his rapid rise to fame.

"As actors we can all relate to the years of struggle it takes, all the auditions to find the right role. It took me eight gruelling years to finally find my perfect role,'' he said to laughs.

Levy and co. not up 'Schitt's Creek'

Macdonald threw some soft jabs at nominees including Tremblay and Plummer, while riffing on the name of leading TV nominee "Schitt's Creek,'' noting the audience was guaranteed to "hear the word Schitt's about a hundred times'' that night.

Indeed, the CBC sitcom was crowned the top TV comedy, and claimed nine wins overall, including comedy acting prizes for stars Eugene Levy and O'Hara.

Levy thanked his son Dan Levy, a best actor rival and his co-creator on the sitcom, and his daughter Sarah Levy, who also appears on the show.

"The design of this whole thing was for me to be the straight man on the show, working with funny people and being the guy to carry the story I was really excited about the prospect of playing a character that is probably the straightest thing I've done in my career,'' he said.

"This award only means to me that I failed miserably at that.''

Backstage, Levy and O'Hara expressed support for dubbing the award after their fellow "SCTV'' pal.

"John was kind of an iconic Canadian, a funny man, a great actor, just a darling guy to work with and a great friend.

"It may have started out as a bit of a joke but by the end of the show it just seemed, 'Well, that's the name of the award.'' — Eugene Levy

'Orphan Black' wins big

Space's clone drama "Orphan Black'' dominated the TV drama categories with seven wins, including best actress and actor trophies for Tatiana Maslany and Millen. It notably missed out on a nomination for best TV drama, a prize that went to Bravo's "19-2.''

Other multiple winners Sunday included the Paul Gross war film "Hyena Road,'' which collected three awards in a pre-telecast ceremony for technical categories including overall sound, sound editing and visual effects.

Meanwhile, the Canada-U.K.-Ireland co-production "Brooklyn'' scored wins for best cinematography and original score.

But it was clearly the night for "Room,'' and Donoghue said she was glad to have one last celebration with Tremblay in Canada.

"Because we made 'Room' in Toronto and then we really launched it at (the Toronto International Film Festival), it feels like the completion of the circle so I couldn't be happier. This is kind of like a wonderful farewell party to this whole crazy year,'' said Donoghue, adding that she hoped to see more remarkable performances from Tremblay.

"Room'' — about a precocious five-year-old who learns he's spent his entire life in captivity — headed into the gala with a leading 11 nominations and plenty of momentum.

Credit much of that to its leading man, who was just seven when filming took place in Toronto.

Tremblay exploded into a media darling this awards season after heart-melting appearances at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards and the Academy Awards.

Another big winner, CBC's acclaimed miniseries "The Book of Negroes,'' collected nine trophies over the course of the week, including wins for lead actress Aunjanue Ellis, lead actor Lyriq Bent and supporting actress Shailyn Pierre-Dixon.

Ellis appeared at Sunday's televised bash in an ankle-length red gown with the words: "President Obama Take it Down'' in black letters on the skirt.

She said on the red carpet it was a reference to the Mississippi state flag, which features the confederate emblem.

Murdoch Mysteries' Yannick Bisson wins the Canadian Screen Awards' Fan's Choice Award... and has some news for Murdoch fans! #CdnScreen16

Posted by CBC on Sunday, March 13, 2016

Bisson, who plays the #ArtfulDetective William Murdoch on the CBC’s much-beloved show ‘Murdoch Mysteries,’ made sure to thank the fans who voted for him - all “80 bajillion of you according to William Shatner.”

Who, by the way, was not surprised by the fans’ choice.

Bisson’s on-screen wife also showed him some love.

But most importantly, Bisson had an announcement to make.

“To all the fans that voted, I have something for you. I can officially announce we are doing CBC 'Murdoch Mysteries' Season 10, baby!"

Which means more head-scratching mysteries to solve.

More nail-biting action.

More zany antics.

More steamy romance.

More of whatever this is.

And maybe even some more wet Murdoch?

Which will certainly get fans feeling like...

And of course, more of that trusty hat!
