TV Show Premiere Dates For 2016: 'House of Cards,' 'New Girl' And More

The mad dash of the Christmas season often makes one forget how laid back January and February can be.

Those months are perfect opportunities to catch up on a slew of TV shows that have their winter premieres during that time.

Television is swamped with great content right now, be it cable, specialty cable or streaming services.

You can find everything from great political dramas ("House of Cards") to cop comedies ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine") and shows about superheroes (any number of series by Marvel and DC).

Here are 19 great shows and their premiere dates in 2016 (warning: potential spoilers if you're not up to date):


"Agent Carter" (ABC)



Season two of the Marvel series sees secret agent Peg Carter (Hayley Atwell) trading New York for Los Angeles, where she begins to see the darkness behind Hollywood's glitz and glamour.

Return date: Jan. 19, 2016


"Arrow" (The CW)



The DC superhero Arrow (Stephen Amell) vows to kill enemy Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) after the baddie kills a key member of his team.

Return date: Jan. 20, 2016


"Better Call Saul" (AMC)



This "Breaking Bad" spinoff recounts the story of Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), one of Albuquerque's shadiest lawyers, before he became Saul Goodman and took on the ultimate client in Walter White (Bryan Cranston). The show's first season had some of the best ratings in the history of cable television, Variety reported.

Return date: Feb. 15, 2016


"The Blacklist" (NBC)



"The Blacklist's" midseason finale saw intelligent criminal "Red" Reddington (James Spader) kidnapped by highway robbers, leaving FBI profiler Liz Keen (Megan Boone) to make an important trade to save him. But Liz has her own problems: she's facing trial for the murder of the U.S. attorney general ... and she's also being targeted by a mysterious organization known as the Cabal.

Return date: Jan. 7, 2016


"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" (Fox)



The continuing misadventures of fun-loving Det. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), as he tangles with the stern Capt. Ray Holt (Andre Braugher).

Return date: Jan. 5, 2016


"Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" (The CW)



The ongoing travails of Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom), a young woman who leaves her job at a New York law firm and chases after love in West Covina, Calif. Her thoughts are illustrated with creative song and dance routines.

Return date: Jan. 25, 2016


"Empire" (Fox)



Music executive Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) works to pass on his record label to his offspring once he learns that he has ALS. But things become complicated when his ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) is released from prison.

Return date: March 30, 2016


"The Flash" (The CW)



This winter will see the DC Comics series about the fast-running superhero introduce Geomancer, a villain who can create earthquakes.

Return date: Jan. 19, 2016


"Game of Thrones" (Fox)



The season six trailer showed us plenty of images to keep us on the edge of our seats, including the big tease of Jon Snow potentially still being alive. Youngest Stark Bran appears to return, as well as the promise of (inevitably) more big death scenes.

Return date: No definitive confirmation yet, except "April"


"The Good Wife" (CBS)



Season seven picks up after lawyer Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) coldly dismissed campaign strategist Eli Gold (Alan Cumming). Gold had admitted to deleting a voicemail from deceased lawyer Will Gardner (Josh Charles), in which he confessed his true feelings for her.

Return date: Jan. 10, 2016


"Gotham" (Fox)



The continuing saga of James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), and his efforts to keep order in Gotham as he grapples with the rise of villains such as The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith).

Return date: Feb. 29, 2016


"House of Cards" (Netflix)



Season three ended with Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) running for the presidency, without his wife Claire (Robin Wright Penn) to support him. Early promotional materials for season four show him only pushing harder for another term in the Oval Office. But how many more people have to die to keep him in power?

Return date: March 4, 2016


"How to Get Away with Murder" (ABC)



Hot off a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama, Viola Davis returns for the midseason premiere of a series about a law professor and her students who are wrapped up in a murder case.

Return date: Feb. 11, 2016


"Jane the Virgin" (The CW)



This comedy series about Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), a devoutly religious Latina who is accidentally impregnated, begins with the revelation that her grandfather is gay ... and that he left her grandmother for a man.

Return date: Jan. 25, 2016


"Modern Family" (ABC)



Zany family comedy returns with the hilarious hijinx of the Pritchetts (Sofia Vergara and Ed O'Neill), the Dunphys (Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet).

Return date: Jan. 6, 2016


"New Girl" (Fox)



Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) keeps being her quirky self after moving into a place with three single guys. Season five will see the introduction of a new roommate.

Return date: Jan. 5, 2016


"Scandal" (ABC)



"Scandal" returns after a cliffhanger of an episode that saw Washington fixer Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) terminate a pregnancy as her relationship with president Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) fell apart.

Return Date: Feb. 11. 2016


"Suits" (USA Network)



This midseason premiere sees Michael Ross (Patrick J. Adams) being investigated for conspiracy to commit fraud by assistant U.S. attorney Anita Gibbs (Leslie Hope). The probe could have wider ramifications for his firm.

Return date: Jan. 27, 2016


"The Walking Dead" (AMC)



The second half of season six will see Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and more doing all they can to survive a zombie apocalypse. Just in time for a Valentine's Day premiere.

Return date: Feb. 14, 2016


"The X-Files" (Fox)



"The X-Files" hasn't been seen on television for 13 years. But FBI investigators Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are making their grand return in a special six-episode run that will see them try to make sense of extraordinary events once again. "Community's" Joel McHale also stars.
